why does "php artisan serve " hang a machine"

I used to run php artisan serve and access the project from the browser without any problem. I am now trying the same but my laptop hangs when I try loading any webpage from the project say 127.0.0.1:8000/home. Each time I load the page it hangs. I have tried clearing cache but it isn't helping. How do I solve this issue?
