Native browser login prompt and laravel

This is stumping me. I see that laravel has basic auth as middleware nicely built in, although you must provide the views.

How can I instead trigger the browsers native login popup in a 'laravel' way? I don't even know how to programatically trigger this prompt at the standard PHP level...
