Sessions get reset every load

After upgrading from laravel 4.2 to laravel 5.1 I noticed sessions stopped saving, I cannot isolate if its my own install causing it, sentinel or laravel itself. However I have poured over every single file and looked for any differences from the latest version (5.1.17) and found no differences other then deliberate ones that do not affect middleware/sessions (new controllers and such).

I checked though google and previous reports and noticed this kind of issue does come up for many different reasons, however none work for me. I am using homestead, latest version so at least in terms of what "should" work its got everything.

I tested and seen that right after a session is set, it works and can be grabbed, however as soon as there is a refresh that session is lost, using database or file the same thing happens.

I come here after about 12 hours of trying to figure it out, the only thing I think could be an issue at this point is a bug in virtual box with windows 10. It forces me to use port 8000 for the vm's host (even after the 5.0.4 update that stated it was fixed). Though this was never an issue before and I do have other apps on laravel 5.1 that run fine in the same setup.

I am on windows 10, using homestead (latest version) and laravel (latest version). Does anyone else have this issue/ have something that can resolve it?
